Presentation and Project

• Presentation: You need to do a presentation on one of the topics listed below.
  • Select a topic: Topic selection is on a first-come first-serve basis. Email me three topics of your choice according to the topic list below. I will add you and your first available choice to this web page. If you do not email me anything by 03/10/05, I will assign you a topic.
  • What to present: You should present the book material on the topic as well as the progress of your project. Note that your project should be closely related to your presentation topic. Your talk should be clear and brief, and it should be about 15 minutes.
  • Give a good talk: Please see http://www.cs.dartmouth.edu/~brd/Teaching/Giving-a-talk/giving-a-talk.html for a set of hints for giving a good talk. Follow these rules when you do your presentation.
• Project: Your project shall be an implementation of a technique related to your presentation topic.
  • Select your topic: Your project could be an implementation of an example which is used to demonstrate the technique you present. For example, if "9.2.1 Dilation" is your presentation topic, your project could be an implemenation of EXAMPLE 9.1.
  • Submit a topic proposal: All topics must be approved by the instructor. You are required to turn in a topic proposal that includes a title, a short abstract, and a bibliography if necessary. The due date of the proposal is 03/31/05.
  • Write your own code: You should create and type in your own code, and any copying (electronic or otherwise) of another person's code or code fragments is a violation of the Academic Ethical Standards. Matlab is the recommended programming language for your project. If you want to use another language, it must be approved by the instructor.
  • Write a documentation: The documentation should have the following components: a cover page stating the title of the project, your name, the course name, the semester, the instructor's name, and the due date; a description of your project that includes an introduction, major steps of the algorithm, and what is achieved; a printout of your code or scripts that should be properly documented and indented; a printout of sample running results.
  • What to submit: You need to turn in one copy of the above documentation as well as your Matlab code to the Learning Portal. A folder titled "Project" is available at the Learning Portal for you to submit your project code and documentation. The due date of the project is 05/05/05.
• Team work: A couple of topics require team work of two students, see the Notes colume in the table below.
  • Presentation: Both need to do a 15 minute presentation, but focuses should be different. For example, one could present the theory, and the other present the implementation.
  • Project: Both should turn in a complete project documentation and state clearly your own contribution.
