Course Description

This course is designed to provide a systematic introduction to computation techniques for modeling and processing digital representations of 3D shapes that arise in many applications including biomedical imaging, computer graphics, computer aided design, multimedia databases, and structural bioinformatics. A number of advanced topics in shape analysis will be studied:

• Shape representation methods.
• Shape matching and registration.
• Statistical shape modeling and analysis.
• Shape classification.
• Shape indexing.

In addition, several practical applications of shape analysis will be covered:

• Disease detection via shape analysis in medical imaging.
• Remeshing, morphing, and texture mapping in computer graphics.
• Similarity search for 3D shapes in multimedia databases.
• Comparing 3D protein structures in structural bioinformatics.

The objective of this course is to introduce the students to a modern and integrated coverage of shape representation, analysis, and recognition techniques and several useful applications of these techniques in practice.

Course Materials

• We will read and discuss relevant papers. There will be no textbook.
• The lectures page will tell you what reading I expect you to do for each lecture.
  • You are responsible for checking the lectures page to determine what to read.
  • And you are of course responsible for then actually reading the assigned reading.
• The homework assignments and exams will be based on material presented in class and material from the readings.

Homework

• Homework assignments will be posted online. Homework is due at the beginning of class on the announced due date. Any exceptions must be approved by the instructor in advance. Late homework will not be accepted.
• Some of the exercises will be routine, but others will be more challenging. I do not expect you to solve all of the homework problems, but I hope that you will benefit from working on the more difficult ones.
• I encourage discussion of homework assignments between students. However, your submitted homework must be entirely your own. You may not copy anything directly from another student's work. You should note with whom you discussed the problem at the beginning of your solution write-up. Note that discussion between two students will be most useful when both students have already made serious attempts to solve the problem on their own.

Requirements and Grading

There will be homework assignments, a term paper or project with a presentation, a midterm exam, and a final exam. The evaluation will be based on:

• Homework: 30%
• Term paper or project: 15%
• Presentation: 10%
• Midterm exam: 15%
• Final exam: 20%
• Class participation: 10%

The letter grades will be assigned using the following approximate scale: (A+,A,A-)[100-90], (B+, B, B-)[90-80], (C+,C,C-)[80-70], (D+,D,D-)[70-60], and F[60-0].

  • For programs, you should create and type in your own code, and any copying (electronic or otherwise) of another person's code or code fragments is a violation of the Academic Ethical Standards.
  • You cannot collaborate or copy in any way on exams.
