There are many different types of dance. This webpage will only focus on three types: Hip Hop, Salsa Dancing, and Swing Dancing.
Hip hop is a type of dance that was first established in the 1970's. It was developed in urban communities by African Americans and latinos. Hip Hop is not only a music genre but, also a cultural movement. In the 1990's is when hip hop music began to evolve and grew further away from funk. The music began to get slower, heavier, and more aggressive.
This gave birth to the new dance style of hip hop which was based on the old school styles that was upright dancing.

Salsa dancing is another popular form of dance that is performed in many spanish speaking communities.
It is usually a partner dance that corresponds to salsa music. It is not a slot or spot dance like the foxtrot or samba. In salsa dancing a couple does not need to travel over the dance floor as much. However, if they choose too they can. They often tend to occupy a fixed area on the dance floor.
The music has two bars of four beats. Salsa patterns typically use three steps during each four beats, one beat being skipped (this beat is often marked by a shifting of weight from one foot to the other.) The music usually involves complicated percussion rhythms, ranging from slow (120 beats per minute) to the fastest (180 beats per minute.)
Salsa Styles
The term "swing dance" is commonly used to refer either to a group of dances developing in response to swing genre music in the 1920's, 30's, and 40's. The majority of swing dances began in African American Communities.
Dances such aws the black bottom dance, charleston, and tap dance are considered members of the swing dance family.
