This is the household of Jia Yin-gui, a family of six, of the Yikezhao League in the southern part of Inner Mongolia.

This family is being monitored for progress as a result of the project. The parents received no eduation, while the oldest daughter is in high school and the three other childern in primary school. In the 1995 survey, this family contracted 96 mu of land, of which 23 mu was used for cultivation, 3 for fruit trees, 10 for forest and 20 for shrub. Of the cultivated land, only 7 mu was irrigated while the remaining 16 mu was dry (rain-fed). They planted 6 mu of corn, 12 mu of grain, and 4 mu of cereal. The family earned 8300 yuan from cultivation and an additional 1500 yuan from herding goats. After spending 3600 yuan for production (not including labor), the net income was 6200 yuan, from which they spent 4000 yuan on food and another 1500 yuan on miscellany.
