In the lower reaches there are 58 major river diversion
gates together with numerous pumping stations and siphons
along the dikes serving to irrigate the surrounding farmlands.
The top picture shows a view of the People's Victory Canal,
which is located near Zhengzhou at the beginning of the
river's lower reaches. The headwork is designed to divert river
water at the rate of 100 cu m per s, for irrigating one million
mu (or somewhat less than 700 sq km) of farmland.
