In the mountainous west. In the top picture a section of the Great Wall ends here by Yellow River's shore at Jingtai, Gansu, where the river emerges from its gorge section and enters into the desert region. Jingtai is about 150 km north of Lanzhou, which lies along the ancient Silk Road. Between Lanzhou and the ancient capital Chang'an (now Xi'an) is the city Tianshui in Gansu, where we find this rock stem protruding from the ground (bottom picture), where religious and non-religious carvings are incised.
