The muddy river. The river turns muddy once it enters the middle reaches which drain the loess plateau. The top picture shows the river near Hekouzhen in Inner Mongolia, which marks the beginning of the middle reaches. The river picks up more and more of the sediment as it flows down the gorge section between Shanxi and Shaanxi provinces.

The sediment load is at its peak during flood flow, as shown in the bottom picture, while the river is also turning violent.
