As Yellow River leaves the desert region in Inner Mongolia, it enters the loess plateau of soil deposits which are easily erodible. Over 90% of Yellow River's sediment enters the river from tributaries in the middle reaches. These two pictures show the passage of the river between Shanxi province (to the right of the river) and Shaanxi province (to the left of the picture).
