1988 NACA National Convention in Los Angeles
NACA held its bi-annual national convention on November 12-13, 1988, in
Los Angeles. An elaborate award banquet was organized by the members of
the Southern California Chapter at the Hyatt Wilshire Hotel, which was attended
by Mayor Tom Bradley of Los Angeles, who presented
NACA-S. California President, David Lee, the City
of Los Angeles Award. The NACA Distinguished Achievement Awards were awarded
to past NACA President, Dr. Y. T. Li, and two Nobel
laureates, Prof. T. D. Lee, and Prof. Yuan-Che Lee. "Three
Li's" made top honors in 1988. (David Lee's family name is actually
Wu, a living case of a "paper son," which was implemented to outsmart
the infamous laws of Chinese exclusion during the first half of the 20th
century; otherwise, we would honor "four Li's.") Dr. Y. T. Li
gave the keynote speech suggesting an economic proposition toward China
for U.S. President-elect George Bush to follow. Prof. James Lee of UCLA's
History Department received the award for his father, Prof. T. D. Lee, while
Prof. Yuan-Che Lee was gracious enough to make a special trip from Berkeley
to Los Angeles to participate in the Convention.
Attended by several hundred members and guests, the banquet invited also
China's Ambassador Han Xu, Director Liao
Hui of the Overseas Chinese Affairs, State Council, and numerous local
dignitaries and community leaders. The banquet was sumptuous arranged by
our very capable officer, Katrina Leung, whose letter
to the management of Hyatt Wilshire Hotel is reproduced here.
A business meeting was convened the following day after the banquet, which
was attended by over thirty officers and representatives from different
Chapters, and was held in Lincoln Plaza, Monterary Park.
