* There were numerous book drives among the chapters. In NACA Newsletter
No. 6, January 15, 1985, a section on "Report from chapters,"
it says,
"Report on Boston Chapter by Kenneth Young: Last year, Boston concluded
a first phrase in a continued book drive in shipping 25,000 volumes of books
to China destined mainly to the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences and eighteen
other universities and institutes."
* A footnote: As a result of the so-called Preposition 2-1/2, many towns
were required to lower their real-estate taxes to below 2.5%, and as a consequence
many towns eliminated their public libraries. NACA was able to obtain large
amounts of donated books from these libraries. Also, many hi-tech companies
in the Boston area, for example, were also eliminating or reducing the size
of their own technical libraries. Many donated technical books came from
these sources.
