The following illustrations are taken from the illustrated version of Sima Qian's Shiji ("Records of the Historian," c. 100 BC). Shiji is probably the most respected historical writing in China. It sets the standard of integrity for all historians to follow. Sima Qian began his Records with the legends of Huang Di and Yan Di (circa 2,000 - 3,000 BC), followed by the legends of the three sage emperors Yao, Shun, and Yu (c. 2,000 BC). According to Shiji Yu felt such responsibility to his flood-control work, that he left home just four days after his wedding to return to his job, and thrice he past by home without setting foot in it. As childern we were asked to emulate Yu's diligence.
Illustrated classics are popular among children, and these legends have left deep imprints in their minds. The following pictures depict Yu's field work in flood control. The geographical scale unfortunately is totally in error.
