The levee embankment at Kaifeng (开封) on the south side of the river, where numerous breaches had occurred during historic times (mostly to the west of it), is now strengthened better than ever before. There is however inundation behind the levee because of its low level. Flood water laden with silt is pumped there to raise its level. This had been an on-going project for the past half century.
