The levee embankment at Kaifeng on the south side of the river, where numerous
breaches had occurred during historic times (mostly to the southwest of it), is now strengthened better than ever before. There is however inundation behind the levee because of its level is lower than the riverbed. Flood water laden with silt is pumped there each year to raise its level. This had been an on-going project for the past half century.
